Title

Fish Tails

Problem Scenario

A fisherman could use my robot to attract other fish, A scientist could use it in marine experiments.

Broad Question

Can a fake fish impersonate a real fish.

Specific Question

What are the emotions a real fish will show towards fake fish when different materials and colors of tails are used?

Hypothesis

I hypothesize that the fake fish with the silk tale will get the most attractions because it moves the best.

Graph of Hypotheses

In this graph I did not add the oval fish because I believe it wont get any attractions!

Variables

Independent Variable:

movement of tail

Dependent Variable:

Number of fish attracted

Variables That Need To Be Controlled:

Fish, Time, Same fish, Light, Sound, Size of tank, Temp.

Vocabulary List That Needs Explanation

movement of tail
Attraction
Silk
Spandex
Plastic

General Plan

I will make a 4 fake fish stick them in a tank and i will see the amount of fish attracted, and which tale looks most real.

Potential Problems And Solutions:

Fish don't reacted, Judge experiment on color of tale and compare reactions
Pet parade wont let me test there,Kennett middle school
Fish kicks the bucket, buy a new fish
Lunch ladies run out of fish sticks, don't run out of fish sticks

Safety Or Environmental Concerns:

I don't think my project will create any safety concerns. my fake fish will not be with the real fish.

Experimental Design

(add the correct headings from the experimental design page before beginning)

What is your experimental unit?

One ex-posher

Number Of Trials:

40 because I am 4 doing different fish and I will test them each 10 times

Number Of Subjects In Each trial:

4 different subjects

Number of Observations:

40 times

When data will be collected

Data will be collected 2-10-13 through 3-1-13

Where will data be collected?

Data will be collected in the kennet middle school office.

Detailed Procedure

My Procedure, I am making 4 plastic fish, each fish will have a different tail. One has Spandex, one has Silk one will have Plastic and the last will have no tale. I am doing this to test attractiveness and the reaction of real fish. The Spandex fish is a dark bold color, The silk is clear, and the plastic is white. I wander if the different colors would effect the fish to?
So first I take a silly puddy container and rap it in white duck tap. Then draw on eyes, and last I will tape on a stick, that I will hold when moving the fish. Then I will start testing. I will put one fish at a time into a side tank hooked up to the real tank. And I will observe and record reactions.

Results

The Results of my project are based of the amount of behaviors and attractions the real fish show to my fake fish, The real fish show Constant results of poking, staring circling, following, nudging and ignoring . My spandex fish also shows constant results, but has more attractions than the real fish, but the attractions are not exactly good because they involve attacking. My silk fish has constant results but it has less attractions than the spandex fish. Next is my plastic fish, which also shows constant results, and also has the closest results to the real fish. Last is my oval fish, it showed constant results but there were very little behaviors recorded.

Conclusion

I hypothesize that the fake fish with the silk tale will get the most attractions because it moves the best. I reject my hypothesis because, the spandex fish had most attractions. I believe my spandex fish had most attractions because it is a dark color which makes it look bold, and that is why the real fish attacked it, which made more attraction types on my graph.

Discussion

My project is based on the behaviors real fish express to fake fish, each fake fish has a different tip of tail, which has a effect on the real fish behaviors. The Real fish express lots of following and nudging to one an other, so I was happy whenever the same results where shared with my fake fish. I noticed not a lot of action ac-cured when I put my Oval fish in, I believe it is because my Oval really is not a fish, it is a empty silly puddy container. I also noticed that the real fish attacked the spandex fish, I think this happened because it had a very dark colored tail, which may make the fish look bold and threatening. I believe my Silk fish looked most real and therefor attracts the other fish. My plastic fish got the most attractions which I am very happy about because I hypothesized it would! I also was able to answer my experiment question, because the real fish did interact with my fake fish and lots of different emotions recurred. There was a problem before I started my project, I was going to build a Robotic fish but I couldn't so I am building one next year. This experiment could have been improved if I had even more fish!

Benefit to Community and/or Science

This Project could help people understand that fish like people also have emotions.

Abstract

My project is mainly about the behaviors of fish, what I did was put fake fish in a side tank hooked up to a aquarium. There I tested the reactions, I did this by watching from a far distance with a chart of behaviors. the behaviors were based of what type of actions the real fish did without being bothered. The behaviors I had on my list were, Poking, staring, circling, attacking, hiding, following, nudging, ignoring, and crazy swimming!!! I put each different fish in my side tank and I checked off the reactions that recurred. I had four different types of fake fish, and each one got different reactions. I had a silk tailed fish, a spandex tailed fish, a plastic tailed fish, and a plain silly puddy container. I tested each fish twice and compared the results.
